According to the US National Report on Alcohol and Tobacco in 2018, young people continue to move in the opposite direction using traditional and vape ratios.
The University of Michigan "Monitoring the Future" study found that the consumption of traditional cigarettes in Year 12 students fell to a record low of 7.8%, compared to 9.7% in 2017. Use of the product at least once within 30 days is considered a one-time purchase. Researchers typically survey 40,000 to 50,000 8th, 10th, and 12th grade students in about 400 middle schools.
At the same time, 26.7% said they had taken at least one vape in 30 days, compared with 16.3% in 2015.
Among the 12th grade students, the use of smokeless tobacco has reached a record low of 4.2%.
Interestingly, the sharp decline in traditional cigarettes has almost become an afterthought by researchers and many anti-smoking advocates and the FDA. They pay more attention to the use of vape by teenagers. For example, most of the researchers' statements in their three-page statement are used to state the use of vape, and only one paragraph is about traditional cigarettes.
The percentage of 12th grade students who consumed nicotine vape was 20.9%, compared with 11% in 2017, and the proportion of people who only used flavored vape was 13.5%, up from 9.7% in 2017. The number of people who smoked cannabis rose from 4.9% to 7.5%.
Gregory Conley, president of the American Vape Association, said that before vape was introduced, the smoking rate of teen cigarettes had been stagnant for several years.
Richard Miech, the first author of the study, said in a statement, "The policies and procedures to prevent young people from using vape have obviously not worked. We need new policies and strategies."
