New York City sues multiple appliance makers for selling vape to minors
According to foreign media reports, New York City filed a lawsuit against more than a dozen online retailers on Wednesday, saying they sold vapes to minor residents. After vape caused a series of lung diseases, the United States stepped up its crackdown on the entire vape industry.
New York City in a lawsuit asked a federal judge in Brooklyn to bar 22 online retailers from marketing vape to residents under 21. The city government also requires these companies to install systems to verify the age of customers. The New York City government said in a lawsuit that even if buyers said they were minors, they could still buy vapes.
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement, "Children in New York are the pride of our city, but for these companies they are only a source of profit." Lifelong smoking addiction is unreasonable. "
Lawsuits against vape manufacturers and sellers have been on the rise. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) claims that vape has caused at least 18 deaths and injured more than 1,000 people in the lungs. Agency officials have not identified a single product or substance as causing harm.
Juul Labs, the largest vape maker in the United States, is the defendant in nearly 12 federal lawsuits focused on pre-trial information exchange in San Francisco. Some have also targeted the lawsuit against Altria Group. Juul faces more than 40 lawsuits in state courts. Some plaintiff parents claim that their children became nicotine addicts after using vape.
Earlier this month, New York State issued an emergency ban on flavored vape, but a New York State appeals court rejected the ban after a challenge from the US vape Technology Association (VTA). The association said that the vast majority of diseases are directly related to products containing tetrahydrocannabinol e-liquid on the black market, and not related to regulated nicotine products.
