Regulating vape will make it less attractive
With the advancement of science and technology, vape, as a new type of tobacco product, has gained widespread attention around the world in recent years. However, opinions differ on the regulation and health effects of vaping. At the Sixth National Member Congress and the 24th National Academic Symposium on Tobacco Control and Health, Ms. Li, a technical officer for the Tobacco Free Initiative of the World Health Organization Representative Office in China, provided us with a new perspective. She emphasized that the key to regulating vape is to reduce its attractiveness, and the realization of this goal requires the country to take a series of comprehensive and comprehensive measures.
First, we need to realize that vaping is not an effective tool for quitting smoking. Although vape manufacturers claim that they can help quit smoking, the World Health Organization's position is very clear that vape, as a consumer product, has not been shown to be effective in smoking cessation at a population level. In fact, nicotine-containing vapes are highly addictive and harmful to health. While the long-term health effects are not fully understood, what is established is that they produce toxic substances, some of which are known to cause cancer.
What’s even more serious is that the proportion of teenagers using vape is higher than that of adults globally. This is not just a health issue, but a social issue. Vape manufacturers will carefully design some communication content on social media. Even brief exposure to these related contents through social platforms will make children want to try vaping more. The World Health Organization therefore calls for urgent action to protect children from vaping.
Faced with this severe situation, how should the country act? Ms. Li proposed two major directions: First, strengthen the implementation of the ban and continue monitoring and supervision in countries where the sale of vape is prohibited; second, in countries that allow commercial operation of vape as a consumer product, strict supervision should be carried out to reduce its attractiveness. Specifically, this includes the implementation of the MPOWER package of tobacco control measures. These measures include monitoring the smoking environment, quitting smoking, banning tobacco advertising, increasing tobacco taxes and tobacco prices, etc., and have been proven to reduce tobacco use.
In implementing these measures, countries need to be alert to the emergence of new tobacco products and interference from the tobacco industry. The emergence of new tobacco products has brought regulatory challenges, and interference from the tobacco industry has affected the progress of tobacco control efforts. Therefore, tobacco control measures should be comprehensive and comprehensive.
After summarizing all aspects, it can be seen that the core of regulating vape is to reduce its attractiveness, which requires the state to take a series of comprehensive and comprehensive measures to ensure the effectiveness of public health intervention measures. Only then can we truly protect our children and society as a whole from the dangers of vaping. This is not only a difficult task, it is an urgent one. Let us work together to create a healthier and better future for our next generation.
