Vape usage rises in South Korea
According to the Yonhap News Agency, the results of a survey released by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Department of Disease Management on the 27th showed that in the past 20 years, the smoking rate of Korean men has fallen by almost half, but the use of vape has increased in the past 3 years.
According to the results of the "2018 National Health and Nutrition Survey", the smoking rate of Koreans has dropped significantly to the lowest level in history. Last year, the smoking rate for people over 19 years of age was 22.4%, a year-on-year increase of 0.1 percentage point, but it was significantly lower than the 1998 survey (35.1%). The smoking rate for men fell from 66.3% in 1998 to 36.7%, a decrease of nearly half, and for women increased from 6.5% to 7.5%, a slight increase. At the same time, vape usage rate was 4.3%, a record high since the survey began in 2013. 7.1% of men smoke vape, and that percentage of women is 1.1%.
Judging from the results of the "Adolescent Health Survey 2019", the smoking rate among adolescents is 6.7%, which is basically unchanged, but the rate of smoking vape has continued to increase in the past three years. The percentage of adolescents who smoke vape is maintained at the level of 2.2% -2.7% in 2016-2018, and rose to 3.2% this year.
In addition, in the past 20 years, chronic diseases such as hypertension and obesity, physical activity, and dietary habits of Koreans have also changed. The obesity rate for men over the age of 19 rose from 25.1% in 1998 to 42.8% last year, and for women it fell slightly from 26.2% to 25.5%. The proportion of men over the age of 30 suffering from hypertension increased slightly from 32.4% to 33.2%, and that of women fell from 26.8% to 23.1%. With the increase in animal food intake, fat intake (average daily nutrient intake per person) increased from 40.1 grams in 1998 to 49.5 grams in 2018.
