What experts think about vaping
Vape, an emerging product that has gradually come into people's view in recent years, has attracted a large number of users with its stylish appearance and harmless propaganda. Controversy continues over vaping, especially regarding health and its impact on youth. So, what do the experts think about vaping?
First, let’s be clear: experts’ opinions are not monolithic. Although most experts agree that vaping is harmful to the human body, there is still controversy over its specific degree of harm and effectiveness in smoking cessation.
Jiang Yuan, vice president of the China Tobacco Control Association, believes that vape is unsafe and harmful to the human body. But at the same time, he also believes that vape can reduce harm, and more and more evidence shows that vape can help quit smoking. This view holds that although vape is not completely harmless, it is less harmful to the human body than traditional tobacco and may be used as an auxiliary tool for smoking cessation.
Xiao Dan, director of the Tobacco Disease and Smoking Cessation Center of China-Japan Friendship Hospital, holds a more cautious view. The "China Smoking Hazards Report 2020" clearly states that vape is unsafe and can cause harm to health. Xiao Dan emphasized that there is currently insufficient evidence that vape can be used as a smoking cessation tool, and its role in smoking cessation at the population level is still unclear.
Qi Yong, director of the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine at Henan Provincial People's Hospital, is concerned about the potential impact of vape on teenagers. He said that teenagers may be more inclined to accept cigarettes in the process of trying vape, which is the biggest harm of vape. This also reminds us that we need to pay more attention and vigilance to the issue of vape use by teenagers.
But as a staff member of an e-liquid manufacturer, I think that salesmen and flavorists often test vapes, and after many years of work experience, they are not addicted to vapes. Therefore, the assertion that vaping is addictive requires further scientific research and evidence.
Vape is still a new product, and it has been very controversial since it appeared. Opinions on vape in society are polarized. Some people like it very much, and those who hate it will not use vape. However, they criticize vape. At most, I think these people’s opinions are not enough for the public to refer to. What we need is more scientific data.
Currently, experts generally agree that vaping is harmful to the human body and has potential negative effects on teenagers. But experts are divided on whether vaping can be used as a smoking cessation tool. More scientific research is needed in the future to clarify the health risks and potential benefits of vaping. When facing the problem of vape, we should remain cautious and rational, especially for teenagers, and we should strengthen education and supervision.
